Yohji Yamamoto is a foundational figure of avant-garde fashion, celebrated for challenging Western conventions of glamour through masterfully structured, oversized silhouettes and an uncompromising dedication to the color black. Along with Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons, Yamamoto disrupted the fashion establishment during his 1981 Paris debut, introducing an aesthetic characterized by asymmetry, raw edges, and a deliberate subversion of traditional gender norms. After graduating from Keio University with a law degree and studying design at Bunka Fashion College, he launched his namesake label in 1972.

His garments are meticulously patterned to drape away from the form, allowing the fabric to catch air and move dynamically with the human body. He famously works with an almost exclusive palette of black, a color he describes as modest and arrogant at once, which forces the viewer to focus purely on silhouette, texture, and technical cutting. Beyond his primary runway collections, his extensive creative universe spans iconic sub-labels and pioneering collaborative ventures:

Y's: Established in 1972 as his very first functional, everyday womenswear line rooted in a distinct masculine ethos.
Y's for Men: Launched in 1979 as a dedicated menswear line focusing on relaxed, functional everyday staples.
Y-3: A historic, long-running partnership with Adidas started in 2002 that single-handedly pioneered modern luxury sportswear.

Commune’s archival selection celebrates Yohji Yamamoto’s profound mastery of silhouette and textile manipulation, focusing particularly on his pivotal 1990s to 2000s outputs that embody his anti-fashion philosophy and unparalleled structural grace.
