0044 Paris is rooted in the idea of "Revolutionary Romanticism". Conceived in 1998 by Tokyo-born artistic director Seiichiro Shimamura (嶋村正一郎), the label spent its early years as a personal outlet before expanding commercially on a seasonal cycle in 2003, releasing both men’s and womenswear lines. Fascinated by numbers and a personal view of beauty, Shimamura chose the ambiguous name "0044", replicating the number four ("shi") that is traditionally associated with bad luck and death in Japanese culture.

The 0044 universe is built upon a delicate tension between two conflicting forces: an aggressive, raw edge balanced against a sensitive, softer silhouette. The resulting garments possess a dark, poetic mood anchored by fluid, relaxed draping and intentional deconstruction. Elements of classic tailoring sit alongside oversized layering, skull motifs, and traditional French heritage references. Shimamura insists that accessories, custom showroom sets, and highly specific environments are fundamental to storytelling. Consequently, his first Paris boutique opened in 2001, which became legendary as the Boutique Rouge due to its striking, predominantly red décor.
