Issey Miyake is a monumental figure in 20th-century design, globally celebrated for fundamentally rethinking the relationship between the human body and fabric through technological innovation, radical patternmaking, and a democratic design philosophy. Born in Hiroshima, Japan, in 1938, Miyake graduated in graphic design from Tama Art University in Tokyo before training in Paris and New York, working under legendary couturiers Guy Laroche and Hubert de Givenchy. Returning to Tokyo, he founded the Miyake Design Studio (MDS) in 1970 and launched his namesake label shortly after, debuting on the Paris runway in 1973.

Miyake’s design ethos rejected traditional Western couture's rigid structural tailoring and body-shaping techniques. His work treats fabric as an interactive medium that responds to movement, air, and the wearer's body. Driven by an endless curiosity for technical experimentation, Miyake fused traditional Japanese craftsmanship with cutting-edge industrial technology, working extensively with synthetic heat-treated polyesters, recycled materials, and three-dimensional draping. His groundbreaking material research led to several revolutionary sub-labels and iconic innovations:

  • Permanente (1985): An archival line dedicated to reissuing and preserving enduring classic shapes from Miyake's early decades.
  • Pleats Please Issey Miyake (1993): A revolutionary line featuring garments cut and sewn two to three times larger than their final size, then folded, sandwiched between sheets of paper, and fed into a heat press to create permanent, wrinkle-proof micro-pleats.
  • A-POC (1998): Developed alongside Dai Fujiwara, utilizing computer-controlled weaving technology to produce fully formed, seam-free garments directly out of a single tube of fabric.
  • HaaT (2000): A textile-focused line led by Makiko Minagawa, rooted in traditional Indian and Japanese handcrafts, artisanal dyeing, and heritage fabrications.
  • me ISSEY MIYAKE (2001): A line of lightweight, stretch-fit, colorful everyday layering pieces and compact, seasonal stretch-pleat tops (internationally known as Cauliflower).
