Launched in 1998 under the vision of Diesel founder Renzo Rosso and creative director Wilbert Das, Diesel Style Lab was created as the Italian powerhouse's high-end, experimental directional line. Operating as an incubator for premium design and elevated material research, Style Lab was explicitly positioned to bridge the gap between street subcultures and the refined, technical luxury of Milan and Paris runways.

The line became renowned for its futuristic, utility-inspired silhouettes, featuring complex ergonomic paneling, asymmetric zip closures, cold-dyeing techniques, and technical fabric blends like coated cottons and high-density nylons. Its aesthetic captured the distinct late-1990s and early-2000s cyber-utilitarian movement, blending industrial workwear details with futuristic motorcross and military aesthetics. Before the line was eventually absorbed and evolved into Diesel Black Gold in the late 2000s, Style Lab stood as Diesel's purest expression of raw, technical experimentation.
